The Problem
The frequency of kidnapping is growing. An estimated 10,000 incidents occur globally every year but as many as 90% of kidnap and extortion events go unreported. The threat of kidnap, extortion, and illegal detention has become very real as a result of wealth inequalities and a growing number of people living and working in frontier and emerging markets. Today, terrorists, insurgent groups, transnational criminal organizations, drug cartels, local street gangs and pirates all use kidnap and extortion to fund their illicit activities or to make political statements in areas challenged by weakened security environments. When a kidnapping, extortion or detention incident occurs the costs can extend well beyond ransom payments and can include litigation, adverse publicity and long-term damage to image and reputation.
